    Abstract

In this paper, one will look at English articles, which is thought to be difficult for Korean learners to learn. First, two theories of traditional grammar scholars will be presented and the theory of Han. Jespersen (1933) categorized nouns into ‘thing-words’ and ‘mass-words,’ and suggested the use of an article that combines them. Christophersen (1939) classified nouns as ‘unit-words’ and ‘continuation-words,’ and explained the use of them accordingly. Han (2004) said that the number of nouns and countability are the determinants of the choice of the definite and indefinite articles. Kim (1998) suggests some rules when a countable noun is changed to anuncountable noun or an uncountable noun becomes a countable noun.It is not possible for English learners to use the article precisely without considering the context and identifying the article as a single element. Also, it should be understood that the English articles that are associated with nouns vary according to the attribute changes. It is necessary to use them correctly according to context, situation, and noun attributes. English learners will have to use the articles correctly by the context, situation, and changes in attributes of nouns.
